Earned Media

Coverage and mentions a brand earns from independent third parties. Press, reviews, forums, and best-of lists. Rather than pays for (paid media) or publishes itself (owned media). It is the dominant source of AI citations.

Also known as: earned coverage, earned placement, third-party coverage

Earned media is coverage a brand earns from independent sources. Journalists, reviewers, community forums, and third-party best-of lists, as opposed to paid media (advertising you buy) or owned media (pages you publish). It is not purchased and not fully controllable, which is exactly why AI engines and readers trust it more.

Earned media matters for AI visibility because engines lean on third-party corroboration when they decide who to cite. Muck Rack's 2026 State of PR report found that roughly 99% of AI citations come from non-paid, earned sources (a single-survey figure, directional). It aligns with the wider pattern that independent best-of lists are cited far more often than brand-owned pages for commercial "best X" queries, so earned placement, not self-promotion, is what wins those citations.

The caveat: earned media can be influenced but not dictated, and faking it backfires. Manufactured reviews or planted mentions read as astroturfing and can trigger site reputation penalties. The durable route is genuine credibility. Real coverage, real reviews, strong E-E-A-T, that engines can find and quote.
